Not Sure If Your Patch Is Iron-On? Here’s How to Find Out

As a manufacturer that has been crafting iron-on patches for over 20 years, we've noticed that while customers have plenty of choices, many still struggle to tell the difference between a quality iron-on patch and a sew-on one or other types of patches.

Here are some tips to help you tell them apart.
1. Is the back of the patch smooth and slightly shiny?
When you get a patch, simply flip it over to check the backing. A traditional sew-on embroidered patch has no adhesive, so you will feel the natural, slightly rough texture of the woven threads. In contrast, an iron-on patch will feel distinctly smooth to the touch. This is because it features a layer of heat-activated adhesive on the back, typically about 0.1mm thick, which often gives it a slightly glossy appearance.
However, distinguishing them can sometimes be tricky, especially with older patches. Over time, the adhesive on an iron-on patch can wear off or become less visible, making it easy to mistake for a sew-on patch. In such cases, we recommend using a magnifying glass to examine the backing closely. You will often find faint, transparent residue or subtle marks left behind by the original adhesive layer.
2. Bend or Flex the Patch to Check Its Stiffness
Typically, you can tell the difference by bending the patch. An iron-on patch will feel slightly stiff due to the adhesive layer on the back, whereas a sew-on patch remains soft and pliable.
However, note that this method is less reliable for thick or heavily made patches, as the difference in texture can be too subtle for a non-professional to detect.
3. Look for PET Film on the Front
Some iron-on patches come with a clear PET film on the front. During heat pressing, this film protects printed details from damage while helping transfer heat evenly to activate the adhesive on the back. If your patch has this clear layer, it’s guaranteed to be an iron-on patch.
4. Check for a Sewing Edge
Take a close look and feel the outer edge of the patch. Sew-on patches typically feature a circle of the border (usually 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm wide) that is slightly recessed, creating a subtle "stepped" depth compared to the main body of the patch.
This border is designed to provide a clear channel for stitching onto garments.
If you see or feel this distinct, recessed edge, it is a clear indicator that the patch is meant to be sewn.
Conversely, iron-on patches usually lack this recessed sewing border, as they are designed for heat application rather than stitching.
5. The Aging Check (Look for Yellowing)
Look closely at the backing. Over time, the hot-melt glue on iron-on patches naturally oxidizes, often turning a slight yellow or beige—especially right around the edges.
Sew-on patches don't have this issue. Since they're just fabric, they age evenly. Any discoloration will be uniform across the whole piece, without that telltale yellowed ring from old glue.
6. Not All Materials Support Heat Transfer
6.1 TPU
Due to the unique material properties of TPU, thick or 3D-curved TPU patches are generally not suitable for heat pressing.
In our manufacturing experience, applying a pressure of over 2 kg or a temperature exceeding 160°C poses a significant risk to these patches.
Under such conditions, the TPU material will almost certainly lose its 3D structure, become flattened, or distort permanently.
Therefore, if you see a thick or curved TPU patch, you can confidently identify it as a sew-on patch, as this application method is chosen to preserve its original shape.
6.2 Genuine leather
Genuine leather is generally not suitable for standard heat pressing.
The high temperatures (typically around 140–160°C) required to activate hot-melt adhesives may damage the leather surface, causing it to shrink, harden, or even discolor.
Therefore, heat transfer is not a viable option for real leather.
7. Simply test it with a heat press
If you prefer to skip the visual inspection, the 20-Second Test is suitable for you:
Place the patch on a piece of fabric and press it with a heat press for about 20 seconds. An iron-on patch will bond tightly with the fabric, while a sew-on patch will simply separate. Quick and easy!

8. No Heat Press? Try This Quick Water Test
If you do not have a heat press machine handy, here's a simple trick you can do right now with just a drop of water. Place it on the back corner of the patch (pick a hidden spot to be safe) and watch what happens.
If it's an iron-on patch, the water will bead up and roll right off—that smooth adhesive backing is basically waterproof. But if it's a sew-on patch, the fabric backing will soak up the water almost immediately, leaving a little damp spot.
It's not as definitive as actually heat-pressing it, but it's a great quick check when you don't have the equipment handy. Just remember to wipe it dry right away, and skip this test on water-sensitive materials like leather or suede.
